5 Yard vs. 6 Yard Hoppers: Choosing the Right Capacity for Your Job

Choosing between a 5 yard and a 6 yard hopper is one of the most common sizing decisions material handling teams face. Pick a capacity that’s too small and you’re stuck with constant dump trips; pick one that’s too large and you’re carrying space and weight you never use. This guide covers where each size fits and how to work out which one your operation needs.

Why Hopper Capacity Matters

Capacity affects labor, fuel and safety. An undersized hopper means more trips to the dumpster, more operator hours and more wear on the forklift. An oversized one adds tare weight, can exceed what your forklift can lift once it’s loaded, and takes up floor space you need for other work.

The 5 Yard Hopper

The 5 yard self-dumping hopper is the largest of our standard sizes and is built for high-volume work in scrap yards, recycling facilities and manufacturing plants. It carries the top rating of our heavy duty line, up to 8,000 lbs, and moves a lot of material per trip while staying within reach of a well-specified forklift.

  • Scrap and recycling operations with steady daily volume
  • Manufacturing plants clearing production waste
  • Sites where space and maneuverability still matter

The 6 Yard Hopper

The 6 yard self-dumping hopper is the largest hopper we list. It’s designed for the highest-volume operations, where moving more material per load cuts the number of trips per shift. Because a full 6 yard hopper can be very heavy, we quote its load rating against your actual material rather than giving one fixed figure.

  • High-throughput scrap and recycling yards
  • Bulky, lighter material that fills volume before weight
  • Sites with forklifts rated for the loaded weight

Weight Comes Before Volume

Cubic yards tell you how much fits; pounds tell you whether you can lift it. Dense material — scrap steel, concrete, rubble — reaches a hopper’s weight limit long before it fills the volume. That’s why a 6 yard hopper only makes sense when the material is light enough, or the equipment strong enough, to use the extra space. For dense material, the right answer is often a smaller hopper, such as the 2 yard model rated at 6,000 lbs.

How to Estimate the Capacity You Need

  • Track how much material your operation generates per shift or per week
  • Weigh a typical load, or ask us for the density of your material
  • Check your forklift’s rated capacity at the load center you’ll use, loaded
  • Count how often you can realistically empty the hopper: fewer pickups favor a larger size

If you’re consistently filling a smaller hopper several times a day, stepping up a size can pay off. If a hopper rarely fills past two-thirds, you probably have the right size already.

Custom Capacities

Not every job fits a 5 or 6 yard hopper. We build standard sizes from ¼ cubic yard upward and modify any standard hopper to fit an application. If you’re not sure which size fits, request a quote with your material and volume and we’ll recommend one, or compare the full range of self-dumping hoppers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the largest hopper Apex makes?

The 6 yard self-dumping hopper is the largest Apex lists. Its load rating is quoted against your actual material.

How much can a 5 yard hopper carry?

The Apex 5 yard self-dumping hopper is rated at up to 8,000 lbs, the top rating of the heavy duty line.

Should I size a hopper by volume or weight?

Both, but weight usually decides it. Dense material reaches the weight limit before it fills the volume, so check the loaded weight against your hopper and forklift ratings.
